The Judas Contract Reading Guide

The Judas Contract

Overview:

The Judas Contract is a key storyline in DC Comics, first published in 1984 in Tales of the Teen Titans #42–44 and Annual #3. Written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Pérez, it is widely regarded as one of the most significant arcs in Teen Titans history.

The plot focuses on the Teen Titans, a group of young superheroes that includes well-known characters like Robin (Dick Grayson), Starfire, Cyborg, and Changling. The main antagonist is Deathstroke, a deadly mercenary who seeks to dismantle the team from the inside, with the help of a mysterious new ally. Throughout the arc, the Titans face internal and external threats, forcing them to reckon with betrayal, trust, and personal growth.

At the time of publication, The Judas Contract was praised for its mature storytelling, emotional depth, and Pérez’s detailed artwork. It also cemented Deathstroke as a major villain in the DC Universe and introduced the character Nightwing, adding to its lasting impact. Fans and critics alike often regard it as one of the best Teen Titans arcs, with its complex characters and dramatic twists helping it stand the test of time.

For crossover and significant events, I typically only read the main story the first time I encounter it. Trying to read all of the tie-ins with the story tends to make them increasingly convoluted and are not crucial to the main narrative. However, I think they are important to read, as many series-shifting plotlines can happen.

For the tie-in issues, I only read them as they come up in the reading guide that I am working through. This can become problematic because the tie-in issues are not always included in collected editions of the event. So you may need to hunt for them.
