Robin War Reading Guide

Batman: Robin War

Overview:

Robin War is a 2015-2016 crossover event in DC Comics that spans several series. Written by Tom King, with contributions from Tim Seeley, Lee Bermejo, and others, the story takes place primarily across Robin: Son of Batman, We Are Robin, Grayson, and the Teen Titans titles. Key artists involved include Khary Randolph and Mikel Janín, whose dynamic styles give the event a fast-paced, energetic feel.

The story centers around a conflict involving various “Robins” from different corners of Gotham City. The main protagonists include Dick Grayson (the original Robin), Damian Wayne (the current Robin), and the “We Are Robin” movement, a group of teenagers inspired by the Robin legacy. Tensions rise when Gotham City passes a controversial “Robin Law,” making vigilantism illegal and targeting anyone associated with the Robin identity.

On the antagonist side, we see the rise of a mysterious group called the Court of Owls, who seek to manipulate events for their own sinister ends.

Critically, Robin War received mixed to positive feedback. Fans appreciated the focus on the Robin legacy and the blending of various characters, but some felt the pacing was rushed. The event, while action-packed, was seen as mostly enjoyable for those already invested in the various Robin-related titles.

    • Collects: Robin War #1-2, Robin: Son of Batman #7, Grayson #15, Detective Comics #47, We Are Robin #7, Gotham Academy #13, Red Hood/Arsenal #7, Teen Titans #15

For crossover and significant events, I typically only read the main story the first time I encounter it. Trying to read all of the tie-ins with the story tends to make them increasingly convoluted and are not crucial to the main narrative. However, I think they are important to read, as many series-shifting plotlines can happen.

For the tie-in issues, I only read them as they come up in the reading guide that I am working through. This can become problematic because the tie-in issues are not always included in collected editions of the event. So you may need to hunt for them.
