Red Daughter of Krypton

Supergirl: Red Daughter of Krypton

Overview:

Red Daughter of Krypton is a DC Comics storyline that takes place primarily in Supergirl issues published between 2014 and 2015. The arc was penned by writers Michael Alan Nelson and Tony Bedard, with art from Paulo Siqueira and Emanuela Lupacchino.

In this storyline, Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, becomes the host for the Red Lantern Ring, which magnifies her existing rage. Already struggling with feelings of alienation and loss following her arrival on Earth, Kara is pulled into a cosmic conflict between the Red Lantern Corps, led by Atrocitus, and other factions of the universe.

The Red Lanterns, known for their intense anger, are the central antagonists in the story, but Kara’s own internal battle and emotional journey take center stage. The story also features notable appearances from Superman and Green Lantern, as they try to help Kara navigate her newfound power.

Critically, the arc received mixed but generally positive reviews. Some fans appreciated the fresh take on Kara’s struggles and the emotional depth the Red Lantern powers added, while others felt it detracted from her character’s core optimism. The artwork, especially Lupacchino’s, was widely praised for capturing both the epic scope of the battles and Kara’s vulnerability.

For crossover and significant events, I typically only read the main story the first time I encounter it. Trying to read all of the tie-ins with the story tends to make them increasingly convoluted and are not crucial to the main narrative. However, I think they are important to read, as many series-shifting plotlines can happen.

For the tie-in issues, I only read them as they come up in the reading guide that I am working through. This can become problematic because the tie-in issues are not always included in collected editions of the event. So you may need to hunt for them.
