Gotham War Reading Guide

Batman/Catwoman: Gotham War

Overview:

The Gotham War arc, published in 2023, explores the tense dynamics between Gotham City’s key players. Written by notable creator Chip Zdarsky, this arc features vibrant artwork from artists like Jorge Jiménez and others, delivering a visually engaging experience.

In this narrative, Batman faces off against his former ally, Catwoman, who takes a stand for the city’s marginalized citizens. The conflict centers around differing philosophies on justice and governance in Gotham, making the protagonists’ motives deeply personal. While Batman embodies traditional heroism, Catwoman’s approach challenges those norms, positioning her as a formidable antagonist.

The arc garners mixed reactions from critics and fans alike. Some appreciate the character development and the complex themes of morality and loyalty, while others feel it strays from the classic Batman narrative. The art style receives praise for its dynamic and expressive visuals, enhancing the storytelling.

Overall, Gotham War compellingly examines its characters and the societal issues facing Gotham, inviting readers to reflect on the nature of heroism in a troubled city.

Best Way To Read:

  • Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War
    • Collects: Batman #137-138, Catwoman #57-58, Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Battle Lines #1, Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Scorched Earth #1, and Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Red Hood #1-2

For crossover and significant events, I typically only read the main story the first time I encounter it. Trying to read all of the tie-ins with the story tends to make them increasingly convoluted and are not crucial to the main narrative. However, I think they are important to read, as many series-shifting plotlines can happen.

For the tie-in issues, I only read them as they come up in the reading guide that I am working through. This can become problematic because the tie-in issues are not always included in collected editions of the event. So you may need to hunt for them.
