Endless Winter Reading Guide

Justice League: Endless Winter

Overview:

DC’s Endless Winter is a crossover event published in 2020, with the main story spread across several titles. It’s co-written by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz, and features art from Howard Porter, Phil Hester, and others. The event focuses on a group of familiar heroes, including the Justice League, trying to prevent the Earth from being locked in an endless winter. As the world is engulfed in ice, the story jumps between the present and flashbacks to centuries ago to reveal the origin of the villainous Frost King, who serves as the primary foe.

The event is relatively contained, running for about nine issues across various titles like Justice League and Superman: Endless Winter. Fan reception was mixed—many appreciated the simple, straightforward narrative that felt like a classic superhero adventure, while others thought it lacked the complexity or stakes of larger DC crossovers. Critically, it’s viewed as a fun but not groundbreaking storyline, with praise for the art, especially Porter’s dynamic action sequences.

Overall, Endless Winter delivers a concise, self-contained superhero story that contrasts with the darker, more cosmic storylines often seen in DC’s larger events.

For crossover and significant events, I typically only read the main story the first time I encounter it. Trying to read all of the tie-ins with the story tends to make them increasingly convoluted and are not crucial to the main narrative. However, I think they are important to read, as many series-shifting plotlines can happen.

For the tie-in issues, I only read them as they come up in the reading guide that I am working through. This can become problematic because the tie-in issues are not always included in collected editions of the event. So you may need to hunt for them.
