Day of Judgment is a large-scale supernatural event, bringing heroes, antiheroes, and mystical forces together to combat a literal apocalypse. The story starts when the fallen angel Asmodel teams up with Neron, unleashing Hell on Earth and taking control of the Spectre. This leaves the heroes scrambling to mount a multi-front battle across heaven, hell, and the mortal plane. Meanwhile, a side story involving Hal Jordan—still in his controversial role as the Spectre—adds another layer of tension. The stakes are cosmic, the cast is vast, and the twists are abundant.
What I loved most about Day of Judgment was its scale and ambition. The simultaneous battles across different realms—heaven, hell, and even space—added a sense of urgency and complexity. The concept of a multi-faceted attack really stood out and kept the story fresh, as it wasn’t just another superhero brawl. The big twist that all of this chaos was orchestrated by Egtrion to demote Neron into a rhyming demon? That was such a clever narrative turn, and it made me appreciate how layered the plotting was. Even the JLA tie-in at the end, with its surreal dive into the Joker’s mind, was a delightful trip that added depth to the event.
That said, there were a few points that dampened my enthusiasm. My biggest gripe is with Hal Jordan during this era. Coming off of Final Night and Parallax, Hal’s arc as the Spectre just didn’t land for me here. He felt more like a plot device than a meaningful character, which left me rolling my eyes more than rooting for him. I’m hopeful that Geoff Johns’ eventual reboot of the Green Lantern might change my opinion, but here, he was a weak link in an otherwise strong chain. Additionally, while I loved the ending twists, there were moments where the pacing felt rushed, especially with so many characters vying for attention.
Day of Judgment still earns a solid 4-star rating from me. It’s a thrilling, imaginative story that perfectly showcases the supernatural and mystical corners of the DC Universe. If you’re considering exploring more magic-heavy stories (and I might be, especially through Constantine), this event is a must-read. While it’s not without flaws, the strong writing, bold twists, and high stakes make it highly recommended. It’s definitely something I can see myself revisiting in the future.
