From Hell is another one of Alan Moore‘s cornerstone works. It is set in late 1880s London and tells Moore’s version of Jack the Ripper. This is more than just a murder novel. London itself becomes a character, as it covers the struggles of overpopulation, poverty, and the disparities of class society.
At times it can be overtly graphic, which must have pushed the envelope. I read this in black & white. That, combined with the more crude artwork, made it hard to follow who’s who at times. Black & white felt appropriate with the story’s tone, but I wonder if the color version becomes the easier read. T
From Hell shows up on the top of many lists. I can see how the reviews are so good and that the story was very well written. I just couldn’t get into the period of 1880s London. I am glad I read it once, but I probably won’t come back to this again. I give this 2 stars.
